FRIGHTENED RABBIT'S SXSW BLOG
We shall make a small list for you of the highlights of our SXSW so far.
1. A Daily Dip/Race - We done a daily dip of the body in the swimming pool of La Quinta Hotel. I won.
2. Margarita - We drank lots of these. Some good some bad but all with the same end product (I won).
3. Vic "Michael" Galloway - We met this man every day. He gave us whisky which we drank on the streets of Austin with Nick the Cameraman (he was made of plasticine). This was right after the Scottish showcase which was good cos my Mum said so.
4. Shows - We have played about 25,000 shows in 3 days. It was hard at first but once you break the ten barrier it all makes enormous sense and becomes easy as old ladies and scotch eggs. The best show we played was probably Make Model or the Raveonettes. They were well mixed up!!
5. FIVE
6. Good Bands - The Felice Brothers, Raveonettes, Right on Dynamite, The Brother Kite, Make Model, Mike Galloway, U2 feat. Bono
7. Bad Bands - Lance Dance, Burgen, Sailor John, Mark Devine (DJ Set)
8. Titty Bingo - Full House (I won)!
9. Children's Museum - Billy pushed the train round lots and lots. FUN!! (clap clap) SWIMMING POOL!! (clap clap) CHIPS!! (clap clap)
10. Tam Brousseau - Off to see Tam now after watching House feat. Hugh Laurie it's going to be Michael Jackson!!

More from MakeModel....
Today is our last full day in Austin. It feels like it's gone by really really really really fast - we only arrived yesterday, surely?! We played at the NME Wave Rooftop last night, which was the one and only show that we got a soundcheck (!!) for. I really enjoyed it. Our faithful new friend 'Raven' came along, too - that made him Most Dedicated, clocking in at an impressive 3 out of 4 gig attendances! Yesterday afternoon was the Scottish Music Showcase at the 'British Music Embassy' aka Latitude 30. It was well air-conditioned - just as well cos it was absolutely rammed all day (free bar...?). That show was crazy, with 10 minute alloted changeover times between bands... now considering we have enough gear to keep a small country satisfied... well you can imagine. But the vibe was great, and so was the line-up, so it was a good day for all. Favourite show for me was the Clash Magazine showcase on Thursday night - we were playing with the Pigeon Detectives, Carbon/Silicone, Peggy Sue & The Pirates and Noah & The Whale.
Again, mad getting set up but once we did (kudos to Mic and Ritchie, our crew geniuses - I think they could survive an armageddon type scenario and still be back for breakfast) it was well worth it. The crowd was great and very kind to us, and it just felt... right. haha! Cheese with everything, over here.. Oh and after the gig I headed off with the lovely Ris and Angie to some wacky gig/parties - one was in the Austin Children's Museum where I milked a fake cow, played a fake wood board guitar, drove a giant static bus.. and spoke to some lovely locals about where best to find the booze at 3am in Austin - answer: nowhere. It was horribly true, too.
Right, this is the last day after all so I'm off to cram in some more madness. Can't wait to get back to Glasgow for some more blistering sunshine and BBQ's...
Day 3 in Texas!
Days 1 and 2 have galloped off in a cloud of smoke. We arrived on tuesday night, enjoying a proper induction to the American Way via a road trip from Houston to Austin. It's my first time in the states so I was just looking at EVERYTHING, wondering how the hell I got into The Movies!! I keep seeing things from Dazed & Confused and yelling out to the rest of the guys, but nobody seems to care about that as much as I do!! One of the first things we did on arrival, greeted by this clement weather, was find a more suiting replica of our natural habitat - in the Beer Fridge-Room (!) at a gas station.
Wednesday morning we went to do a photoshoot for the NME. We went with them out to a park on the edge of town, with this really amazing waterfall and river, so we all got sexy and posed about, then we got in the water despite the ranger's best warnings against fecal matter, biohazard waste, blue-green algae, that sort of thing. We escaped with nothing worse than sunburnt noses. After that we bashed out an acoustic session for Mr Galloway of Radio 1 in Scotland, did a wee interview, and then checked out the rest of the town. I really like Austin already - everyone's friendly. There are no neds. It's sunny. The beer is cheap. I'm not coming back. Just kidding, US authorities. Sorry. Don't shoot.
Went to see a few bands after dinner, lubed up by Silver Moon Margheritas. Decided to play it patriotic and headed off to the Domino party to see Sons & Daughters... but the queue was round the block so we bailed on that after 20 mins and headed for Maggie Mae's Rooftop to catch Frightened Rabbit, who were intensite, passionate, and loud. Winners.
Today I've just got back from an Xfm acoustic session, in their hotel bedroom/professional broadcast studio facility. It was actually really fun so listen out for that this week. Vibin', man.
First proper full band shows are coming up later on today, so I'm off to limber up for that. Got the proper bug for it now after the live shows last night. Bring it!!
MM xx
