Our International Commitment

The Big Issue in Scotland is a founding member of the International Network of Street Papers, (INSP). Since The Big Issue in Scotland's beginning it has held a strong commitment to sharing our experience internationally with streetpapers around the globe.

In 1996 we forged a partnership with No Borders, the streetpaper in St Petersburg. Over the years we have helped many streetpapers with their development, first through our international department, Big Issue in Scotland International, (BISI), and now through our sister charity, Poverty Solutions.

With this passion for sharing knowledge, Mel Young, founder of TBIS, has driven the INSP forward as its president since 1998.

From its inception up until March 2003, The Big Issue in Scotland covered the costs of a secretary of the INSP, and was responsible for the further development of the network. In March 2003, three-year funding was secured to create a more permanent structure for the INSP.

Street Papers

There are approximately 150 street papers working all over the world, all providing their own creative ways of tackling the issue of homelessness. The Big Issue in Scotland works with all of these papers and is involved in partnership projects with some of them.
