Our International Commitment

The Big Issue in Scotland is a founding member of the International Network of Street Papers, (INSP). Since The Big Issue in Scotland's beginning, it has held a strong commitment to sharing experience internationally with street papers around the globe.

Over the years we have helped many street papers with their development, first through our international departments and now through our membership of the International Network of Street Papers (INSP), a charity which is also based in Scotland.

With this passion for sharing knowledge, Mel Young, co-founder of The Big Issue Scotland, has helped to drive the INSP forward and acted as President and then Honorary President from 1998-2008.

From 1998 until March 2003, The Big Issue in Scotland covered the costs of a secretariat of the INSP. In January 2004, the Scottish government awarded INSP with core funding and it became an independent charity with full-time staff. The INSP developed significantly since then.

Street Papers

There are approximately 150 street papers working all over the world, all providing their own creative ways of tackling the issue of homelessness. The Big Issue in Scotland works with all of these papers and is involved in partnership projects with some of them.
