The Big Issue goes to Holyrood

Vendors meet MSPs to talk through problems around homelessness

A delegation of Big Issue vendors met with MSPs in the Scottish parliament this week to discuss homelessness during the current economic downturn.

The six vendors, lead by Scottish distribution manager John Duffy, met with Labour MSPs Cathy Jamieson and Bill Butler as well as Trish Godman, one of Holyrood’s Deputy Presiding Officers.

They talked over the problems the homeless and socially excluded face in accessing everything from healthcare to job opportunities and the benefits of earning a living through selling the magazine. They also talked about the ways The Big Issue in Scotland was engaging with communities affected by the difficult economic situation and how it was aiming to help.

“It was a very worthwhile and welcome meeting,” said Duffy. “It was important as it meant the vendors could see their voices were being heard in the corridors of power.

“We are delighted both Cathy Jamieson and Bill Butler showed a commitment that others haven’t always had in the past. We hope that something tangible can be built upon from this.”

Also present were The Big Issue in Scotland editor Paul McNamee and the Big Issue’s UK business development manager Peter Bird.
