Folk singer to be honoured

23/03/2009

Scots songstress who worked with Bob Dylan gets degree

One of Scotland's
most renowned folk singers is to be awarded an honorary degree.

The University of Glasgow will acknowledge the outstanding contribution of Jean Redpath to the nation's music and cultural life.

Redpath, now 71, worked with Bob Dylan and Rambling Jack Elliot in the height of the folk revival, after moving to the United States in 1961.

She already has honorary degrees from the Universities of Stirling and St Andrews and the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama.

Edinburgh-born Redpath first learned traditional Scottish music from her parents, and is celebrated for her recordings of Burns songs throughout her 50-year career.

Glasgow University vice principal, Graham Caie, said: "Jean Redpath has made a huge contribution to the performance of Scottish folk song. The university is delighted to award her an honorary degree in recognition of her contribution to Scottish culture and broadcasting."
