Scots authors scoop prizes

24/11/2009

Pupils vote for faves in biggest-ever children’s book awards

Children across Scotland
have decided on their favourite authors in Scotland’s largest kids’ book prize.

John Fardell, Lari Don and Keith Gray will each receive £3,000 after being named as this year’s winners for the 2009 Royal Mail Awards. Author/illustrator John Fardell won the early years category for Manfred the Baddie – the story of a hapless crook who steals art and kidnaps inventors.

Lari Don won the younger readers prize (8-11 year-olds) for First Aid for Fairies and Other Fabled Beasts, and Keith Gray triumphed in the older readers category (12-16) for Ostrich Boys.

Record numbers of children took part in the voting process this year, with nearly 30,000 children from all over Scotland actively involved in the awards compared to 18,000 in 2008 and just over 10,000 in 2007. Votes were cast from every single Scottish education authority, from Dumfries and Galloway to Shetland.

Anna Gibbons, Children’s Programme Manager at Scottish Book Trust commented: “Thousands of young readers have read, debated, reviewed and most of all enjoyed a selection of the best Scottish children’s books of the year – we’re really proud of their achievement.”
