Smeato to print claims in The Big Issue

20/10/2009

Glasgow North East candidate to disclose expenses in magazine

Have-a-go hero John Smeaton has pledged to use The Big Issue in
Scotland to clean up politics – if he is elected in a forthcoming by election.

The former airport baggage handler, who famously defended
GlasgowAirport from attack by bombers in June 2007, is standing as an independent candidate for the Glasgow North East seat vacated by newly appointed peer Michael Martin.

One of Smeaton's main aims is to “clean up politics” in the wake of the expenses scandal at
Westminster. In order to maintain accountability, he has promised to disclose all his monthly claims in The Big Issue in Scotland

Smeaton said: “I was as shocked as anyone else by the extent of MPs on the take. There’s been a lot of hot air but not much action to ensure there can be no fiddling with expenses in future. I’ll be badgering them until they get the message.

He added: “I want to make sure everything I do is clear and accountable, and I think The Big Issue in
Scotland is the right place to do that because it is a great publication trusted by the public.”
